How the Shared Expenses Calculator Works

1. Choose how to split your expenses

Pick the method that works best for you:

  • 50/50: You each pay half of the shared expenses.

  • By income: Each person contributes to shared expenses in proportion to their share of the combined household income.

  • Custom percentage: Choose your own split, such as 60/40 or 70/30.

2. Enter your monthly shared expenses

Enter the costs you both contribute toward, such as bills, groceries, dining, transport, subscriptions and insurance.

Leave any category you don't share at €0.

Tip: By default, every expense follows the split you selected in Step 1. To use a different split for a specific expense, select “Customize split” below that expense.

3. See each person's contribution

The calculator applies your chosen split to your total monthly shared expenses and shows how much each person contributes.

Tip: You can also view the breakdown to see how each expense is divided.

How Your Share Is Calculated

For a 50/50 or custom split, the calculation is straightforward: your share of the total is determined by the percentage you selected.

For an income-based split, your share is calculated from your monthly take-home income relative to your combined household income.

Income share = individual monthly take-home income ÷ combined monthly take-home income

Shared-expense contribution = income share × total monthly shared expenses

For example, if you earn €1,800 and your partner earns €1,200, your combined monthly income is €3,000. Your income share is 60%, so you would pay 60% of the shared expenses.

What counts as shared expenses?

Shared expenses are costs that you and your partner have agreed to contribute toward. These may include household bills, groceries, subscriptions, dining out, transportation, and other costs you regularly share.

Only include expenses you’ve agreed to share. If you’re unsure what should be included, read our guide to shared expenses.

What if one person earns more?

Your contributions don't have to be equal when your incomes aren't equal. An income-based split allows each person to contribute according to their share of the combined household income.

For example, if you earn 65% of the combined income, you would contribute 65% of the shared expenses.

This can be a useful approach when you want the cost of shared expenses to reflect each person's ability to contribute.

Example Calculation

Let's say you earn €3,200 per month and your partner earns €2,400. Your combined income is €5,600, so you earn about 57.1% of the household income and your partner earns about 42.9%.

Your monthly shared expenses are:

Shared Expense Monthly Cost (€) You Your Partner
Electricity €90 €51.43 €38.57
Gas €60 €34.29 €25.71

Choosing a Shared Expense Split

There’s no single split that works for every couple. The right approach depends on your incomes, preferences, and what feels fair to both of you.

  • 50/50 — A straightforward option when you want to contribute equally.

  • By income — Useful when you want contributions to reflect each person's share of household income.

  • Custom percentage — Ideal when you and your partner have agreed on a specific split.

The best split is one that feels fair, works with your finances, and is easy for both of you to maintain.

Compare 50/50 vs proportional splitting to see how the two approaches differ.

Know the split. Stop chasing the balance.

Once you’ve worked out how much you each want to contribute, you shouldn’t have to keep track of it every time you spend.

Partly gives couples a shared wallet for the things you do together, while keeping track of what belongs to each of you. You can both spend from the same balance without settling up after every dinner, grocery shop or subscription — and when it’s time to top up, you can see whether things are still fair and rebalance if you want to.

Share the spending, without having to merge your finances.

Be among the first couples to try it!
